Michael L. Shorten was born on August 19, 1949, in Houston, Texas. He is the third son of the late Ray Benjamin Shorten and Mary Helen Shorten. To his union were four boys George, Kenneth, Michael, and David Shorten; two girls Anita Smith and Sandra Shorten.
Michael attended public schools in the Houston Independent School District and graduated from Evan E. Worthing High School, May 1969. He applied to and was accepted to Prairie View A&M University, September 1969. In 1973, Michael graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts.
Michael began employment with Houston ISD at E. E. Worthing High School, in 1973. Four schools and 38 years later Michael retired from HISD, in 2011. He was also employed by Prairie View A&M University as an Adjunct Professor, in the College of Education.
Michael is married to his loving wife Rose M. Shorten, this union began August 1970. 42+ years ago the couple had two children Marcus Andre and Monica Renee Shorten; one niece Ricka Collins; grandsons Marcus Jr. and JaMarcus Shorten, and one granddaughter Dominique. His interest in RVing and fishing keeps him going.
Michael earned his Master of Science degree in 1979; Vocational Supervisor Certificate in 1986; and Mid-Management Administrator Certification in 1995. He is also a member of Epsilon Pi Tau (Vocational Honor Fraternity).
Michael is the newest deacon at Greater Ebenezer Baptist church; he was ordained May 2013. He also serves in multiple capacities at GEBC.
